Biggest Cyber Threats Likely To Hamper Your Business |
|
One of the worst aspects of cyber crime is the fact that it is anonymous. The digital platform is so conducive to commit a crime partly because it is difficult to identify the real face behind the crime. This is precisely what gives the attackers and spammers the strength and courage to try to attack such hugeenterprises. Once your system has been affected by an unknown external source and your data has been stolen by the same, it could be difficult for you to locate the offender and determine where they are, no matter how hard you try. It is often said that only a cyber criminal can crack the code of locating its counterpart. This should be enough to explain the fact that the anonymous nature of cyber crime acts as a major threat for the cyber security of a business organisation.

From the past few decades, cyber crime has been increasing at an extremely rapid pace. Though you may not consider it to be a major threat as compared to other traditional crimes, it does strike hard when it is committed. There are various insurance policies that you can purchase in order to safeguard your business, but hardly consider having insurance for cyber crime. It is high time the enterprises realise the importance of having such an insurance and the fact that such crimes can cause far more serious damage as compared to the traditional ones. The word ‘botnet’ is essentially derived by clubbing the words ‘robot’ and ‘internet’. Therefore, botnet is a collection of various devices connected through internet, such as PCs, mobile devices, servers or any other device supporting internet. The devices forming a botnet are infected and controlled by a malware. They are already designed to cause damage in several nasty ways to the organisation or individuals they choose to target . The damage and control of botnets is so smart that the users of these devices hardly get to know that their system is being controlled externally. In simple terms, phishing is a cyber attack in which the defaulter sends an e-mail to the target which generally contains a malicious link. The target is then lured to click on the link, which then gives criminals the power to attack the target. It may lead them to a random website, or it may lead to automatic downloading of a random file which infects the host system. Phishing is nothing but a more dangerous version of a spam mail. Traditional spam mails are more about advertising and sales campaign, while phishing mails are more sinister in nature. They can be much more subtle and manipulative as their final goal is to obtain information that is confidential to the target’s email. The title ‘phishing’ is essentially derived from ‘fishing’, where the offender uses lucrative links as baits to trap the targets and cause cyber damage to their systems once they are hooked on to the bait. Ransomware is considered to be one of the most dangerous threats to the cyber security of a business organisation. They have been continuously affecting the functioning of public as well as private sector companies. Here, cyber criminals tend to encrypt crucial systems and data of a business until a ransom is paid to them. The criminals generally send messages through random pop-ups on the screens of the infected computers. What happens next depends on the mind of the criminal and how much you have believed in ‘prevention is better than cure’. |
