In simple terms, phishing is a cyber attack in which the defaulter sends an e-mail to the target which generally contains a malicious link. The target is then lured to click on the link, which then gives criminals the power to attack the target. It may lead them to a random website, or it may lead to automatic downloading of a random file which infects the host system. Phishing is nothing but a more dangerous version of a spam mail. Traditional spam mails are more about advertising and sales campaign, while phishing mails are more sinister in nature. They can be much more subtle and manipulative as their final goal is to obtain information that is confidential to the target’s email. The title ‘phishing’ is essentially derived from ‘fishing’, where the offender uses lucrative links as baits to trap the targets and cause cyber damage to their systems once they are hooked on to the bait.
